This Is My Brain

It's Not Perfect, But It's Mine

I idle at "difficult" but can accelerate to "bitch" in .02 seconds.

I'm a writer of fiction, poetry, and critical reviews. I'm branching out into nonfiction centered around fantasy and science fiction. I live in Portland with my adorable best friend tanuki_green, my stepped-out-of-a-Rossetti-painting lover orizarising, and a motley group of animals called the Furry Horde. One of these days I'll get around to listing all of my published work here, but today isn't that day.

My jewelry journal of wearable poetry is chimera_fancies.

I have many professional writers friended. Some are writers I'm already a fan of, and some are writers I haven't read yet. I've had the good fortune to attain some level of friendship with some of the writers I've known for a while. I respect that and I treasure that. I don't assume it will happen every time. It's about learning from, and anyone who posts about their writing process is a good person for me to know. I post about mine. I also post about personal things. LJ is my learning tool and my therapist.

Friend me out of the blue and you will most likely be friended back, unless you are clearly both off your rocker and off your meds. I have a good-sized reading list, and I do read every post. Yeah, I read fast and I'm interested in a lot of things. If you want to read mine and you add me to your list, hello and welcome! Every once in a while I check my Friend Of list, and check out who's reading me. I might add you back right away if I recognize you from posts in other LJs. Otherwise it might be a bit. If you comment regularly in my public posts and I get to know you, I'll probably add you sooner rather than later.

Thank you.

What's in My Journal
William Stafford

Odd things, like a button drawer. Mean
things, fishhooks, barbs in your hand.
But marbles too. A genius for being agreeable.
Junkyard crucifixes, voluptuous
discards. Space for knickknacks, and for
Alaska. Evidence to hang me, or to beatify.
Clues that lead nowhere, that never connected
anyway. Deliberate obfuscation, the kind
that takes genius. Chasms in character.
Loud omissions. Mornings that yawn above
a new grave. Pages you know exist
but you can't find them. Someones terribly
inevitable life story, maybe mine.

When Death Comes
Mary Oliver

When death comes
like the hungry bear in autumn;
when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse
to buy me, and snaps the purse shut;
when death comes
like the measles-pox;

when death comes
like an iceberg between the shoulder blades,

I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering:
what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?

And therefore I look upon everything
as a brotherhood and a sisterhood,
and I look upon time as no more than an idea,
and I consider eternity as another possibility,

and I think of each life as a flower, as common
as a field daisy, and as singular,

and each name a comfortable music in the mouth
tending as all music does, toward silence,

and each body a lion of courage, and something
precious to the earth.

When it's over, I want to say: all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.

When it is over, I don't want to wonder
if I have made of my life something particular, and real.
I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened,
or full of argument.

I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.

Until the juice ferments a while in the cask,
it isn't wine. If you wish your heart to be bright,
you must do a little work. -- Rumi
